This Year, Take Advantage of Free Days at Denver Museums

A recent survey by the National Endowment of the Arts found Colorado ranks #1 in the country in trips to theaters, concert halls, and museums. In recent years, the Denver art scene has seen new burst of energy, drawing big name exhibits, launching an exploding gallery scene, and most recently, landing a huge new permanent installation by the inspiring artist collective Meow Wolf. And with regular free days at the city’s local museums, there is no reason not to check it all out.
Denver’s museums and cultural institutions offer over 1,000 free days each year when community members can visit without charge. These days are funded in part by the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), a special tax district in the Denver metro area supporting the community’s art, culture, and science organizations.
Many of the smaller local museums offer free entrance on a regular basis, like the Hudson Gardens, Aurora History Museum, Arvada Center Galleries, Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum, and the Museum of Outdoor Arts.
You will most likely still need to pay for access to any special shows you are interested in seeing, as the free days typically only cover permanent exhibits. Be prepared to wait in line because these days can be some of the busiest of the year, but don’t let that scare you away--it is well worth it.
