Set Yourself Up for Success with These Six Reads

In 2017, I read 50 books. Pretty good, if I may say so myself. I read for a specific purposes: to help me understand my mindset, limiting beliefs, and future goals. I know this sounds a little “woo-woo” and I would have said the same thing three years ago. The change I have found is that no matter how large my company grows, it will only grow as much as I do as a person. The books below have been essential for me to grow personally, therefore allowing my business and professional life to grow as well.
My call to our Broad Entrepreneurs is to set aside some time for introspection this year (whether you read the books I suggest here or tackle your own list) and set yourself up for a truly epic 2018.
Anchor talks about how to capture the elusive state of happiness that alludes many of us. For a long time, I’ve known that the typical mindset of ‘I’ll be happy when…’ doesn’t work, but Anchor puts statistics, study, and data behind this. He also gives seven simple and tactical ways to increase your happiness, which ultimately increases your level of success.
Hyatt’’s book was a life changer for me. It helps to roadmap a plan for your life and how and where you spend your time. Others have systems similar to this (Tony Robbins--Time of Your Life), but this is a quick and easy read that can help you enact a plan in as little as a day. My EO forum completed this together and now we hold each other accountable to our life plans--saying no to the right things and saying yes to the things we really want.
I love Jen Sincero. Her first book many have already read (You Are a Badass) and this follow up deals with the head trash many business owners--and women--suffer around making and receiving money. It’s packed with information, tactics, and humor.
I have been practicing meditation for just over a year, and this book was one of my primary reasons for implementing that change. Dan Harris takes us on his journey of first fighting and then embracing the practice of meditation which so many sing the praises of.
One of the things I struggle with most is upholding internal expectations. I can hit any goal that someone sets for me, but if I set it for myself it is an upward battle. This book gave me the answer and solution to that problem. If you fly through it (like I did), read her follow up The Four Tendencies to help understand yourself, your spouse, and your team better.
Life is too short to make your own mistakes, therefore you have to learn as much from others as you possibly can. Tim Ferriss is renowned for this belief and interviews top performers from athletes to entrepreneurs on his weekly podcast. In this book, he combines advice from 130 top performers on things like morning routines, best books, and life hacks. It’s a choose your own adventure book, and if you want you can go even deeper with his Tools of Titans, a similar structure but much longer.
I was introduced to Stoicism earlier this year by Ryan Holiday and instantly attracted to one of its central tenets: we don’t control and cannot rely on external events, only ourselves and our responses. As a business owner and control freak by nature, there are so many events in my life that I don’t control and that drives me crazy! Reading one of Seneca’s letters daily has kept me focused on what I can control vs. what I can’t.
